According to deputies, the large rock was thrown from the side of Highway 321, crashed through the windshield of a 1996 GMC pickup truck on Tuesday evening around 7 p.m. Deputies say it happened along the northbound side of Highway 321 between Mile Marker 20 and Mile Marker 24.
The rock came crashing through the windshield striking Pearlie Nailer, 56, of Leland, in the stomach. The rock was about 5-inched by 5-inches and weighed about one pound, deputies told WBTV.
Nailer told deputies that he did not see anyone standing along the highway and there was no other traffic near where the incident occurred. He was transported to CMC-Lincoln where he was treated and released.
"Someone's life could have easily been taken in an incident like the one last night," Detective Lt. Tim Johnson said.
