16th Annual Juneteenth Festival of the Carolinas

The 16th Annual Juneteenth Festival of the Carolinas returns to Charlotte on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, June 13th, 14th, 15th, and 16th in Independence Park.

The Juneteenth Festival is a celebration of not only freedom for enslaved blacks in America, but freedom of all people that have been enslaved throughout time.

The festival will offer a rich array of cultural traditions and diversity through food, arts and music, and offers a broad variety of tantalizing, ethnic foods, plus an even greater selection of vendors displaying unique arts, crafts and clothing from around the world.

Participants can enjoy fabulous R&B, Blues, Jazz, Reggae, Hip-Hop and many more soul-stirring sounds as music and dance groups perform throughout the weekend's festivities.

Admission is free and the festival begins at 10 a.m. and goes until 10 p.m. The Cultural Camp on Thursday begins at 9 a.m.

Downtown Statesville kicks off Spring Art Crawl

Downtown Statesville is kicking off its Spring Art Crawl this weekend.

The juried art exhibit showcases as many as 50 artists in over 28 different shops scattered throughout the heart of Downtown Statesville.

Art lovers can catch the display at West Broad Street in Downtown Statesville, Friday  April 19, from 5:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m.

Parking is available on the street and in 10 public lots throughout the business district.

The event is free and open to all ages.

International Festival celebrates cultural diversity

Mitchell Community College is hosting its International Festival this week.

The Festival features a parade of nations for children, cultural table exhibitions, food sampling and traditional clothing.

International music and dancing are the day's entertainment.

Those wishing to learn more about other cultures can catch the fun at Mitchell Community College, located at 500 West Broad Street in Statesville, Friday April 19, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m.

The event is free and open to all ages.

Entrants sought for Wildflowers Photo Contest

Entrants sought for Wildflowers Photo Contest

The Lake Norman State Park is celebrating the North Carolina state parks' Year of the Wildflower, with a photo contest.

There are 336 families of wildflowers to choose from, across the State of North Carolina.

Entrants are to submit their photo along with their name, the name of the flower, and the location where the picture was taken. Photos are restricted to North Carolina native wildflowers.

Photographers can submit their entries to the Lake Norman State Park, via email, through May 31.

Prizes may be awarded, depending upon the number of entries received.

The contest is free and open to all ages. Only one entry per person is allowed.

Free art exhibit features sculptor Kim Marchesseault

The Louise Gilbert Gallery is hosting an art exhibit and reception featuring sculptor Kim Marchesseault this week.

Kim's work is self-described as "celebration, revelation and at times a rebellion".

She was honored with Second Place in Cary Visual Art, Inc.'s 'Take a Seat 2007', for a piece called "Wish Granted".

Art lovers can catch the display at the Louise Gilbert Gallery of the Wallace House, located at 420 Walnut Street in Statesville, Thursday February 7, from 5:30 p.m until 7 p.m. The exhibit runs through February 28.

Admission is free and open to the public.

Local theatre holds auditions for "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof"

Statesville Theatre is holding auditions for "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof", this week.

Seventeen parts are available for eight men, five women, and four children.

The Tennessee Williams play offers a mix of emotions amongst the characters, as the revelation of Big Daddy's inevitable demise surfaces at his Birthday party.

Those wishing to be in the play can audition at Mac Gray Auditorium, located at 474 North Center Street in Statesville, Monday January 7 and Tuesday January 8, from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m.

Performances are March 8, 9, 10, 15, 16 and 17, at The Black Angus Grille.
