Woman arrested for using husband's info to apply for credit card, detectives say

IREDELL COUNTY, NC (WBTV)- A Statesville woman was arrested after using her husband's personal information to apply for a credit card, according to officials in Iredell County.

On April 30, the Iredell County Sheriff's Office received a report in reference to identity theft. The case was assigned to a detective with the Economic Crime Unit to be investigated.

The victim reported to the sheriff's office that his wife, Monica Chiodo, 45, of Statesville, with whom he has been legally separated for over two years, used his personal information in an attempt to obtain a Discover credit card.

The victim said that he spoke with a representative of Discover card services, who explained to him that Chiodo had applied for a credit card using his personal information.

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV)- The North Carolina Senate released its state budget proposal late Sunday night.

It's a  $20.6 billion dollar plan that includes adjustments to Medicaid, education reform, and a big change for the State Bureau of Investigation.

Senate leaders have been looking for ways to trim costs, and to prevent any tax increases, and they're proposing consolidation as a tool to do so.

But the SBI proposal is starting to look like a convoluted case.

Attorney General Roy Cooper stood with a dozen law enforcement officers today to oppose the move. Cooper says putting the SBI under McCrory's control could create a conflict of interest, and that it would cripple the organization's independence and investigative techniques.

The SBI currently handles public corruption cases, and in the past it's investigated more than 500 public officials, including the past two governors' administrations.

Police looking for two men who robbed Troutman bank

TROUTMAN, NC (WBTV)- Police in Troutman are asking for the public's help in helping find two men they say robbed a man Monday morning.

The incident was reported around 9 a.m. at the Bank of America in Troutman, according to a news release from the Troutman Police Department.

Police say two black males, one using a handgun, made off with thousands of dollars in cash and left the area in a gray Buick Century that was reported stolen to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

The Buick was located in Statesville on the south bound on ramp of Interstate-77 at exit 49A, according to the release.

The subjects had a vehicle waiting there or had stolen another one.

The NC Highway Patrol saw a silver Honda Accord in that same area earlier Monday morning.

Man faces 27 charges involving B&E's at City garage, investigators say

STATESVILLE, NC (WBTV)- A man was arrested in Statesville for breaking into the City Garage and burglarizing City vehicles, according to a release from the Statesville Police Department.

Just before 3:30 a.m. Monday, Edward Mock, Junior, was discovered inside the city garage breaking into city vehicles. The witness called the Police immediately, the report states.

Officers responded and set up a perimeter. When two Officers went into the garage area, Mock ran and was apprehended outside of the fence.

Mock was charged with five counts of breaking and entering motor vehicle, one count of attempted felony larceny, one count of possession of burglary tools, and one count of first degree trespassing.

He was taken before a Magistrate where he received an $8,000 secured bond and was turned over to the Iredell County Jail.

Public invited to free afternoon of canoeing

The Lake Norman State Park is inviting the public to a special nature trip this week.

Participants can join a ranger in canoes, as they explore the natural habitat of Lake Norman.

No experience is necessary. However, the minimum age is 8 years. Also, anyone under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

There is a limit of two people per canoe. Pets are not allowed on the trip.

Nature lovers can join the fun at the Lake Norman State Park, located at 159 Inland Sea Lane in Statesville, Wednesday May 22, at 4 p.m.

The cost is free, and the program is open to the public.

One in custody, police looking for second suspect in Statesville homicide

STATESVILLE, NC (WBTV)- Police in Statesville say they have arrested a man in connection to a murder Thursday night.

Byron Lee Smyre, 22, of Statesville, is charged with murder, according to a news release from the Statesville Police Department.

Smyre is charged with killing 22-year-old Dantae Laquan Stokes of Statesville.

Police responded to a shooting call on the 100 block of East Raleigh Avenue shortly before 4 p.m. Thursday.

Smyre is currently being held in the Iredell County Jail.

A second suspect, 18-year-old Dewayne Tramel Pickett is wanted by police in connection to case on a murder charge.
