Mooresville man charged with stealing, using personal checks

A Mooresville man was arrested earlier this month after police say he broke into a home and stole personal checks.

Justin Michael Nanney, 31, is charged with larceny after breaking and entering and four counts of obtaining property by false pretense, according to a news release from the Iredell County's Sheriff's Office.

Nanney stole several personal checks from a home on Pondview Road in Mooresville and used them to make purchases at three Food Lion grocery stores and two Wells Fargo banks, according to investigators.

Nanney was arrested on May and given a $2,500 secured bond.

Pilots from past Carolina BalloonFest events will launch donation winners as passengers in their gondolas for this celebratory flight.

Man used woman's identity to get 3 credit cards, deputies say

STATESVILLE, NC (WBTV)- A Statesville man was arrested Sunday after police say he used a woman's identity to obtain three credit cards.

Christopher Todd Randall, 45, of Statesville, is charged with three counts of identity theft and three counts of financial card fraud, according to a news release from the Iredell County Sheriff's Office.

A woman contacted deputies when she noticed three credit cards on her credit report that she had never applied for or had knowledge of.

Deputies learned that Randall had been using the three credit cards to make purchases for new furniture and electronics across the county as well as online, according to the report.

Randall was placed under a $5,000 bond for the listed charges.

Heavy downpours continue through Monday, flash flooding could be a problem

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV)- The walls of water continue to fall in and around the Charlotte region Monday.

Between 2 and 3 inches of rain fell across the foothills in the past 24 hours. The National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg issued a Flood Advisory for Burke, Catawba, Cleveland and Lincoln counties until 11 a.m. Monday.

Several WBTV viewers sent in photos of flooding in their neighborhoods. Click on the slideshow to see them.

Heavy rains along the U.S. 321 and Interstate 77 were reported along with some lightning.

Watauga County is under a Flash Flood Watch through Tuesday morning, according to the NWS.

WBTV Meteorologist Al Conklin says anyone out and about Monday should watch out for localized flooding.

You should never try to drive your vehicle through a flooded area or roadway.

Monday's highs will be in the low to mid 70s.

Equipment failure blacks out northern Iredell County

STATESVILLE, NC (WBTV) – More than 1,000 Duke Power customers have been without power for most of the night in Iredell County.

Energy crews have been in the area of Turnersburg for most of the evening trying to determine what caused the outage. Right now Duke officials say it is an undetermined equipment failure.

According to the Duke Power Web site, more than 1600 customers are without power. They do not have an ETA on when power will be restored.

Eight months after unsolved Statesville murder, family gathers to pray for justice

STATESVILLE, NC (WBTV) - Friday night, 100 friends and family members gathered at Oakwood Cemetery to pray for justice in the murder of 30-year-old Joey Brewer.

On September 12, 2011, Brewer was found with gunshot wounds outside the Myrtle Place Apartments on Jonathan Lane.  He died a short time later.  No arrests have been made and police have released very little information about the case to the public.

"I've lost a lot of family members in my life, but this took a part of my life with it," said Brewer's mother, Robin.

She spoke at Friday's prayer service, calling on friends and family to keep faith and trust God even during the difficult time. 

"We're gathering here this evening to pray for justice for Joey's killer to be caught and convicted," said Rick Brewer, Joey's uncle.

"Joey was well loved in this community. He was a very compassionate person," he said.

Mother of wounded warrior reflects on Mother's Day

MOORESVILLE - You may remember Cpl Garrett Carnes, the Marine wounded in action in Afghanistan.  Three weeks ago thousands turned out in Carnes hometown of Mooresville to welcome him home.  Carnes was escorted by hundreds on motorcycles who are part of the Patriot Guard.

Garrett Carnes, who lost part of both legs due to an IED explosion, is doing well, and so is his family.  He is one of four boys of John and Rhonda Carnes of Mooresville, and today she told WBTV what this Mother's Day will mean to her.

"Mother's day has always been so special to me because my four boys are my life, they are my world, there's nothing on earth I could do that would make me prouder than to be the mother of my four boys," Rhonda Carnes said. 

Three of her boys will celebrate Mother's Day with her, only oldest son Garrett will be away.  The Marine who was awarded the Purple Heart by the president is continuing to undergo rehab at Walter Reed
